Amicable Hearts

A universe now altered

since your presence

is ingrained

in everywhere I look

and everything I feel

It’s as though you’re still very real

and yet, it’s your image

that will follow me

indefinitely, so

I’ve tucked the love

that once held your eyes

inside my aching heart

and I haven’t forgotten

your charming smile

I’ll carry them both for awhile

Don’t worry about me

I promise not to break

I’ll miss you, terribly,

but staying close

would be our mistake

When my emotions

have settled

I’ll set you free

and you can look back

Remembering

Me

OBSERVATION

The wind blows
around the corner
touching the man’s brow
His suit pressed to perfection
He smoothly slides into his posh car
and drives away

The bird’s cheerful song
complements the woman’s aura
as she busily chats on her cell phone
Her pencil skirt fits snugly
while she confidently hails a taxi

Across the street
Staying warm with his
old, worn beanie
and thin, weathered coat
huddled against the cold
brick wall,
He watches
and wishes

Clouds roll in

Cold front imminent

Strong winds concurrent

Common sense confirms predictability

Preparation is a necessity

Still, accepting what is inevitable

doesn’t occur naturally~

UNFAIR ASSUMPTIONS

She has only one mission
With state aid in hand
To buy the prettiest cake
Then she tries not to listen

As they snicker and whisper
Like in a bubble
Tunnel vision blinds them
To the entire picture

Callous words cut to her core
Deploring their conjectures
She strongly pushes forward
For her darling little girl

Through their mean masquerading
How would they know
Her daughter battles cancer
Inside she’s justly aching

Six flames may truly be
The most she’ll ever wish over
While sustaining her composure
Mommy does what’s necessary

Longing to silence heartless voices
As with a bar of soap
She contains her emotions
And follows through with choices

Them and the frosty grocer
They’re not worth the stress
Her daughter needs her home
This trip is brought to closure

CHANGES

You don’t listen anymore
You don’t offer your heart
You don’t smile
when I walk through the door

We’re together, yet, so far apart

You don’t bring flowers
at the end of the day
You look right through me
when I have words to say

You don’t kiss me
hello or good-bye
My head is spinning with questions
I ask myself, “why?”

Where have you gone
What have I done
What happened to us
I ask you because
I still love you

Author’s note: Fiction

Joyful Melancholy

Christmas carols accompany as I wander
through the stores, pondering carefully,
so I may give to those, whom I love dearly,
during this joyful holiday season

I hear beautiful, amazing grace in the lyrics
and I wish for my soul to be at peace
Then I think of those whose lives
are filled with pain and tears commence

Guilt overcomes me, as I feel grateful
for the many blessings I’ve been given
How can I feel content when others are hungry,
hoping for a roof to cover their aching hearts?

It isn’t fair others are hurting while we top the tree
with our treasured angel and throw on the tinsel
It isn’t fair they cry for help to come their way
While we roll out the dough and make festive cookies

There is no balance of these confusing emotions
So, what must be the answer to comfort…
to stop the blood from shedding and
the tears from falling, to end the starving?

By showing we care, we silently say our prayers
for those who struggle in their everyday lives
May love hug their souls to heal their wounds and
May their strife be entwined with a whirlwind of serenity

INVISIBLE LOVE

In the beginning…
She never believed in love at first sight
Until he entered her lonesome world
So blissfully in love with her good-looking guy
She was the luckiest girl around

She saw only perfection in his brawny demeanor
His dashing smile enlightened her soul
He was charming and wonderfully masculine
She was completely head over heels

Then dark clouds loomed, her world was tilting
She often blamed herself; her love wasn’t enough
His character transformed in a wicked way
Crushing and bruising her spirit

He took advantage of the simplest things
He had to prove the power was his
She showed no feeling when the pain began
Means to escaping consumed her mind

She forgave at first, assuming his behavior had lapsed
Never thinking it would return again
She was raised to absolve and so she did
Not knowing his love would turn evil

In the present…
She completes the dinner prepared for him
And concludes with a silent prayer
Remaining calm, though unsure of his mood
Her emotions won’t freeze by fear

He walks through the door like a gentleman
And greets her with his meaningless kiss
She serves him his meal on their china
“How was your day?” he, carelessly, asks

She laughs at his absurdity,
But not for him to hear
She mustn’t provoke an angry attack
She must train her reactions to be still

With his stinging words and brutal hands
He’s pounded her into the hardened ground
Maybe weakness clouded her vision
Not allowing the truth to be seen

But, as sure as she was taught to absolve
She had a choice to be smart and proactive
Thus, for self respect, she’ll seek the light
So she can watch the sun rise on the other side
