She Listens

He cares for his father whose body tires
of everyday functions, pain raging at cyclone
force from ninety-nine years of living a lifetime.
Our emotions undulate –
who wishes to watch a loved one suffer?

Another week of work comes to an end.
With glass of wine in hand, we exhale
on the patio. Then the sun says,
“Good night, my dear friends,” as he
gently descends, making room for the moon.

And when the moon appears, Oh, My!
She takes our breath away!
Bright and bold as if she senses
we could use light in our souls.

We open the gate and walk into the street
for an unobstructed view. Under the
illumination, a woman pauses with
her dog, a husky mix, with fur
white as an arctic fox, another rescue,
she tells us, and our hearts leap with joy.

The moon pays attention to us as the
patio welcomes again.
Most importantly, she listens.
And though the stars act a bit bashful,
they eavesdrop and we are fine that they do.

The moon and stars hear us,
just an ordinary couple enjoying
a Friday evening but with heavy hearts.
Their absolute attention, imagine this,
out of all eyes gazing at the brilliant sky –
we know the moon’s lustrous presence is
for us alone, and we are aware that the
panoply of stars will shimmer into view soon.

Then we rise from our seats and head into
the house, feeling relaxed from the wine’s
fluidity, and appreciative that our troubles
have been received.

Something to Say

I have a thought
anxious to be said
it’s been lingering for hours
inside of my head

It’s a very kind thought
I’m sure you’ll agree
so sit right down
and listen to me

It comes with words
to warm your heart
but listen intently
they’re not the best part

They’re only a fraction
of what this thought is
the words unsaid
you don’t want to miss

First let me just say
I appreciate your patience
sitting there nicely
attentive and gracious

Yet fearing a blunder
after all this preparation
I’m feeling distraught
with much exasperation

So I say with regret
and embarrassment this day
my thought, so important
has somehow slipped away!

Realization

San Fran by Michael 2013

Do you need rest,
solitude for your
heart and mind?

Accept and embrace it
and don’t be shy

to admit a fraction
of you needs only to
hear silence

where the depths of
your thoughts can
grow from their
lingering state

A precious gift
for your own
sake

Friend

FRIENDSHIP

If I need a place
to rest my mind
will you lend a shoulder
for just a little time?

If I need to shed
concerns and talk
can I call you up
regardless of the clock?

If I need a hug
to feel some warmth
will you offer protection
from the storm?

Thank you, my friend,
for your loving support
for your uplifting smiles
and your unselfish heart
