Nightfall Symphony

Friday evening provided inspiration for this haibun…

Heading north, airplanes soar in the clear blue, spotlighted by final sun-rays. The golden orb slowly turns in for repose. The sky transforms into a velvet cloak with a few winking stars. Temperatures fall for relief. A covert presence performs a chirping chorus, echoing through firs and oaks – nightly courtship calls. A welcomed soundtrack, soothing like ocean waves for inland people.

soaking in stillness
listening to nature’s song
crickets serenade

Leaving on a jet plane…

Dear Friends,

Matt and I are flying out tomorrow to visit our son, so I’ll be offline until sometime next week. Visiting our daughter and son is by far the best vacation. I don’t like missing posts, but there are times like this that it’s unavoidable. Please know that I appreciate you and your wonderful support throughout my Copper journey, and blogging journey, in general. WordPress tells me it’s been 15 years! But that’ll be another post! 🙂 Anyway, stay safe, and keep your creativity flowing. I’ve turned off comments, but I’ll see you next week!

I thought it would be nice to leave you with a few calming visuals…

Sky Canvas

The beginning…
Highlighted
Slipping, slipping, slipping…

Down by the lake, evening emerges with the fragrance of tranquility. The shore wears nothing but a few rocks scattered in its sand. A father and son hold fishing lines in their quiet space, hoping their luck will change. A lone sailboat glides by, pausing for the unfolding. An older man with hair the color of an egret leans against a stump. The clouds understand we wait with enthusiasm. To our naked eyes, their smooth edges have been highlighted as though the sun outlined each of their fluffy shapes with a fine yellow highlighter. Occasionally, trout jump out of the still water, unable to contain their excitement.

Then suddenly the sky displays an explosion of color: tangerine, salmon, canary yellow, brighter, and brighter with every second. We are transported to a dreamlike place where a painter gently swishes her brush back and forth on the immense backdrop, to the left and right, repeating with grace of an orchestra leader. Artwork in the sky. Can a presentation of the sun slipping behind the cottony clouds be so spectacular? The sun knows it is time for the moon to shine.

A Fine Discovery

Sitting on the shore
feeling inconsequential
in its vast presence,
the surface sparkles
like a rare jewel
just discovered

Dragonflies entertain
like tiny jets
Damselflies with their
blue, iridescent wings
gracefully flit about
relatives by nature

Tiny threads of peace
weave into the marrow
of our souls

A great fortune
to play a part with nature
in this moment of existence –
to discover such a gem

The Gift

Tranquility embraces –
the sun’s exit advances.
Listening to whispers
among the trees,
our time here is a gift,

and when we depart,
the gift will belong

to someone else.

There’s nothing like…

coffee on the patio with some good reading material
happy blooms
a gorgeous sunset
covid humor

More fires rage, the pandemic isn’t going away soon, and political and social unrest remains. So, everywhere we go, whether on a stroll around the neighborhood or a walk around the house, it’s the little things that have the ability to quell the anxiety if we give them the opportunity. XOXO

Shelf Life & Simplicity

I think we all strive for more than temporary happiness, but I’m guilty for eagerly anticipating the weekends. Those are two days in which I can live by my own schedule and do whatever I please. That being said, I’m extremely grateful for our jobs and
on a deeper level, we should embrace each day for the gift it is.
This quote by Vikrmn conveys several points, not all agreed upon, but the larger meaning for me is to focus more on concrete happiness and to allow oneself to dream big – the photo was another gorgeous sunset from last week.

Sometimes an ordinary event is most meaningful. The photo below was taken when I visited my daughter at her work. We’re grateful she is now employed full time after graduation and she’s enjoying it. This was a simple day surrounded by beauty.
