By the Book

Living by the book
doing what is right
you hold your goals high
clearly in sight.

Number one, check
rejoice with your love
the future looks rosy
yet barriers hang above.

Undetectable
to the naked eye
wouldn’t foresee
in the greatest sky.

The first one drops
devastation of heart
keep moving forward
resilient from the start.

You look for the good
in all people you meet
a mixture of manners
some sour, some sweet.

The second one drops
then number three
the counting has stopped
is this meant to be?

Treatment received
appalling at best
a really good person
put to the test.

The past still haunts
in wee hours of the night
when important goals
are nothing but plight.

You focus on the bliss
not one thought to quit
because no matter what
everyone copes with shit.

Though working hard
is still the best method
the outcome isn’t certain
from great work ethic.

Middle of Day

Chimes ring contrasting to
hammer against nail – whack!
Homes get makeovers
why not shine the dull?
Owl keeps watch with golden eyes
its presence reticent to surroundings
Birds glide in now and then for a snack
residual seed drifts to concrete
Leaves flutter from gentle nudge
of summer’s breeze
Footsteps on hardwood walk several feet
was their energy worth it?
Clinking of glass on glass adds rhythm
but not for cutting the rug
Voices remain soundless
where have all the people gone?

Voices

They are in control of
Their content and volume

They can spread love universally
Their intent can increase cruelty
They are powerful to a higher degree
Their gift is not to be taken in vain
They are us, they are you, and they are we
Their capability can beautify our world
They are counting on us to nurture
Their ability to mend what. has. been. broken.

Behind the Faces

black-white-velvet-ornate-jewelled-mask-1099-p

“Be yourself” is
what they say
Let your mask
fall to the ground
(don’t be afraid)
watch all pretenses crumble

yet if they don’t like
what lies beneath
be aware of the
curve balls of judgment

Where is the truth
in their words?
Each syllable’s tone
sounds compassionate

We could be tone deaf
or maybe we simply
hope for the best

(I’ve dropped the mask and have been hurt.
I’ve dropped the mask and
have been blessed with good friends.

I still believe in “being yourself” no matter what;
letting your heart lead the way and hoping for the best.)

OBSERVATION

The wind blows
around the corner
touching the man’s brow
His suit pressed to perfection
He smoothly slides into his posh car
and drives away

The bird’s cheerful song
complements the woman’s aura
as she busily chats on her cell phone
Her pencil skirt fits snugly
while she confidently hails a taxi

Across the street
Staying warm with his
old, worn beanie
and thin, weathered coat
huddled against the cold
brick wall,
He watches
and wishes
