Dear Family and Friends,
I’m excited to share that my poem “The Middle” is live today on Gobblers by Masticadores! To give you a little back story, when I wrote this poem, life had changed tragically for a family member. Since then, there have been many improvements which I believe are miracles. But life still isn’t the same and a daunting question mark hangs in the future. Our family continues with positive thoughts and prayers. And I want to offer a huge thank you, as always, to Editor, Manuela Timofte, for featuring my writing.
The Middle
It doesn’t matter if we’re celebrating
the best thing that ever happened,
or staring at our heart lying on the floor
in millions of tiny pieces.
Time moves ahead (seemingly)
as if we pushed the fast forward button.
Those hands on the analog clock
have a mind of their own,
turning and turning, making our heads spin,
wondering where the hours have gone.
Where have the hours gone?
How does a decade ago feel like yesterday?
Why does my mind tell me I’m forty
when my driver’s license tells me I’m wrong?
Just yesterday, my daughter and son
played with Lego and Barbies.
Today they’re adulting, living with
bills that show up in the mailbox
on a monthly basis. Always prompt.
Just yesterday, I took my last photo
of our senior pup, not knowing
it would be the last photo
I would take of him...

“But do we notice what’s in the middle? Because in the middle is what we shouldn’t miss.” Oh, love this Lauren. When I’m inpatient, I’ve long told myself to chill out, to focus on the weekend, or when a project’s done, or when I’m on vacation. While that might be useful in the moment, I’ve been working on stopping that self talk. My reasoning is what you hit on: the middle is what makes so much of our lives beautiful. Great poem Lauren.
I’m glad my poem resonated, Brian. I need the reminder every so often too. It’s easy to get distracted and stay in that zone while ‘the middle’ passes by. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment! 🤗
Clicking over to read the rest of the poem. Congratulations on its publication!
Thanks so much, Liz, and thanks for clicking over too! 🥰
You’re welcome, Lauren!
You can feel the emotion in this poem. I like that!
Thanks, Ian! That’s good to know!
Everything my older friends told me about time seemingly going quicker the older we get has been true for me. Of course, I know it’s not really going faster, but it feels like it. I just attended the high school graduation of some of my former elementary students from my last class. Time marches on.
I feel the same way, Pete. Time is mystifying, isn’t it? Thanks for stopping by, and again, for your wonderful review of my book. 😁
a beautiful write, Lauren —
Thanks very much, John! I’m glad you liked this poem.

Thanks for your lovely words, Shreya! 💕
I’m off to visit the 3 Masticadores posts!
You deserve all the attention you get, Lauren. You are special, and it shows in your writing.
PS- I’m seeing more of the AI Training not allowed on blogs. I am all in with that, but I don’t trust all the AI entities. I believe they are harvesting our brains, talent and abilities, anyway. Those scummy tech billionaire oligarchs did not get rich by obeying rules. How would we even know?
Thanks so much for taking the time, Resa! You don’t have to, but I appreciate it, and you are just too kind with your words. And re: AI, I agree with you, but I don’t know how we’d know. I heard about posting that phrase at the conference I attended in Feb., so that’s what I’m doing. But I am no tech expert, so who knows? 🥰💕🦋💫
We can only try!
AI has replaced most of my hubs work, and I read it will replace 10-20% of white collar jobs in a year.
Who knows, and where do we go from here?
🦋💜xoxo
Oh, that’s horrible, Resa! My family has had many conversations about AI, wondering how it will affect our kid’s jobs in the future. They’re 33 & 30. The world is so different for them than when my husband and I were their age. It’s all I can do to not worry. xoxoxoxoxo
I understand!
Who would know what to do? The pace of change is so rapid, a person could train for something, then 5 years later, the job doesn’t exist.
That scenario is not new. What’s new is the speed of change.
I just don’t know what to tell young people. Maybe the trades are safest, until “they” build AI cyborgs that can do the plumbing, electrical and even perform operations.
Even the arts aren’t safe, as we can already see.
Humanity may become lost, OR there is a twist on the horizon we can’t fathom yet. I’m going with the twist!
xoxoxoxoxoxo
I agree with your thoughts, Resa, and I’m hoping for a positive twist on the horizon too. Hugs! xoxoxo
Hugs! xoxoxoxo

A lovely and poignant, heartfelt poem, Lauren. I wish your relative, and family, comfort.
Thanks for your kind words and wishes, Steve. He’s doing much better, but I’m not sure life will ever be the same as it was before. Life changed overnight for him and his family. ❤️
Aw, I’m so sorry, Lauren. It sounds like he has a lot of love and support which may not solve things, but can help. ❤️
