Baseballs

One day the sun guides you
with its glorious rays,
the world spins
in its usual manner,
then out of thin air,
in the blink of an eye,
the cliché is yours,
under a sullen sky,
plans become fractured.
Life is altered
in a skipped heartbeat
that was slow to join
the rhythm of the others.
My emotions
feel awkward.
They seem wilder,
body feels heavy
as though pewter
crowds my veins,
but I don’t walk
in their shoes.
Meeting challenges head-on
distracts heart and mind,
but in the hush of turmoil,
I imagine their emotions
will morph into wild too.
Until then,
questions soar like baseballs
out of a batting machine.
Some answers remain elusive.
Others may be clear
as morning dew
but tricky to swallow –
digesting turns into a test
of the human spirit.
What comes next?
Only uncertainty is for certain.

    1. Thanks so much, Jacqui, and in this case, which is heartbreaking, uncertainty fits better. Staying hopeful is what has to be done donning rose-colored glasses, but only time will tell. I appreciate your thoughts. ❤️

  1. Beautiful poem Lauren. 💖 Love this:

Only uncertainty is certain! Now that’s profound and true! 🥰🙏🏼😍

  2. You reminded me of the famous quote by Robert Burns: “There is no such uncertainty as a sure thing.” We live in a complex uncertain world where poetry in a way of bringing balance and calm to our lives. A wonderful poem, Lauren!!

    1. I’m so sorry about your new health challenges, Joy, but I’m glad my poem resonated. I appreciate your lovely words. By the way, your book arrived today. I have a couple of books ahead of yours, but I look forward to diving in. Take care! 💞

    1. True, Ian, but when something big and heartbreaking happens, it’s normal to focus on that. There are little positives along with way, but the event and uncertainty are like an anchor weighing on our hearts. Thank you for your uplifting comment. ❤️

  3. Dear Lauren,

Yes, the sun shines on what ever is happening, be it calm or turmoil, happy times or sad. The sun, when it shines, is an equal opportunity light.

All the challenges and changes right now, make for uncertainty.

I interpret you are writing about the energy coming from the leader of your country, and that energy consuming the planet.

    Uncertainty, except for the sun.

    1. Resa, your comment is poetic! I love “equal opportunity light.” And as much as this poem could be about current times in our country, unfortunately, it’s about a loved one. Thank you for your lovely words, my friend, and for catching up on all my posts. I appreciate it. Lots of love and hugs to you. ❤️🤗🌷

      1. Dear Lauren,

THANK YOU for freeing me from the Spam prison!!!!!!

Aww, a loved one …. I hope all turns out well! Just goes to show where my mind’s at these days… with our election and all.

You know, I actually do say the odd poetic thing in comments on your blog. Must be the poet in you bringing out the poet in me.

        For that I thank you!

        Have the best weekend! 🌸🍒xo🌟

      2. Thanks again, Resa. He came through the bypass surgery which was unexpected but then had a moderate stroke, which is where the uncertainty lies, and was also out of the blue. We pray for a miracle.
Aww, I bring out the poet in you? Well, I’ll take it then, and I always love your comments. 🙂 Wishing you a lovely weekend again. xoxoxoxoxo

      3. Good grief!
I’m pitching in on the miracle prayer/vibes.
I know they are invisible, but I try!
        Lovely love to you, Lauren!

Poetry is always subject to interpretation. I hope that the subtext isn’t regarding a health challenge someone in your family is facing.

      1. It’s okay, Pete. Out of the blue, bypass surgery, but it was successful, then an unexpected stroke. And that’s where the uncertainty lies. We pray for recovery, for a miracle, but it’s slow-going. Thanks so much. 🙏

  5. Your description of questions as baseballs is startling in its newness to me. Neat idea! In that scenario, I’d probably stand back and watch the baseballs whiz by and appreciate the speed of each. Then I’d try to answer with a swing of the bat 🙂
