On Top of the World

the road winds
gaining altitude
we’re on top
of the world
moon glimmers high in the sky
stars dangle unseen

darkness rests
in the neighborhood
quietness
trio stands
arm in arm, eyes on the view
lights twinkle on hills

time will shift
this sweet moment to
memory
we’ll wish to
retrieve and relive, so we
seize the here and now

These poems are in the form of a Shadorma. Here is a description from Wikipedia: The Shadorma is a poetic form consisting of a six-line stanza (or sestet) that originated from Spain. Each stanza has a syllable count of three syllables in the first line, five syllables in the second line, three syllables in the third and fourth lines, seven syllables in the fifth line, and five syllables in the sixth line (3/5/3/3/7/5) for a total of 26 syllables. A poem may consist of one stanza, or an unlimited number of stanzas, called a series. It is typically unrhymed.

A collection of poems about nature, love, and the mysteries of life.

My camera never does justice for moon shots, so I chose to enjoy the moment.

  1. A beautiful poem describing a beautiful night. When I try my hand at something like this, I tend to add or delete a syllable to make it work for me. Definitely adding some new pronunciations to the English language. Ha ha. Love your poem.

    1. Thanks, Brian! This is why I prefer freestyle because I don’t always want limitations. I have to make sure each line is the correct syllable count before publishing. That would be mortifying if I missed a syllable, wouldn’t it? 🤪 But I do enjoy the challenge once in a while and I like the Shadorma format. Thanks for your lovely words.

  2. I love this poem form and your poem is beautiful, Lauren! What a way to seize the moment. My new home is not in the best spot to see the full moon. It’s cold at night. When it gets warmer, I’ll go down a few streets to take photos of the full moon.

    1. Thanks, Miriam! It was a special evening celebrating my husband’s birthday with our son. I hope your moon shots turn out. Mine never do which is why I turned to the internet. 🙂 The moon was so stunning that night but I knew my cellphone wouldn’t do justice even though it takes great photos in general. ❤️🌗

  3. A beautiful weaving of words to seize the moment, Lauren. I took photos of the moon through the bedroom window and need to resize them. 💕

    1. Thanks so much, Eugi! I hope your moon photos turn out! Mine never do which is why I resort to the web! 🙂 And the moon was spectacular, so I had to force myself to not take pictures and simply enjoy the moment. 🩷🌗🤗

  4. Seizing the moment is akin to photography for the soul–we can reference these moments later on when we need to reset our compasses, regain our balance. Exquisite poetry, my friend! 😊

    1. Well said, Mike! Thanks so much! This evening was a great celebration of my husband’s birthday and our 28-year-old son was able to join us, which made it more special. Thanks for your kind words about my poem too. Hugs! 🥰

      1. You just made me think:
We can’t read the future, and the present becomes the past as it happens.
Therefore our lives are really a string of memories.
Life truly is what we make it!
        ❤️❤️❤️🎉
