Dear Friends,
I apologize for my silence this week, but it’s not because my world has been silent…

Dear Tinnitus,

You arrived like an earthquake without warning. One day you simply shook my essence. You could be birdsong, a river flowing, soft rainfall, a symphony, a beautiful melody, but instead, a low hiss.

A negative mind could say like a punctured tire.
A positive mind would say like soothing white noise.

I’m thankful you don’t roar like thunder.
I’m thankful you don’t steal my ability
to function…
to live.

But sleep? Laying my head down on the pillow with you beside me is anything but relaxing.

Everything unpleasant requires mind over matter, so, I repeat,
“I’m fine, I’m fine!”
Eventually, my mind falls into a slumber.

Things can always be worse.

The pros:

I can still hear
the sounds I love.
You’re not horribly loud.
The train of life moves forward.
You didn’t bring pain
with your baggage.
Your visit could be temporary.
It’s not life-threatening.
You’re common.

The cons:

I feel trapped inside you.
No escaping.
A sense of claustrophobia.
I’ve had enough.
Let me out!
Falling asleep is challenging.
Your visit could be permanent.
Living with you is life changing.

I miss the solitude of silence, and now masking your constant presence is a must.

It is a privilege to blow out birthday candles each year, but with aging comes possible bumps in the road. So another bump may have tripped me up, but it won’t keep me down!

Mind over matter…

I hope your stay is temporary but knowing you could decide to hang out with me for the duration of my life, I might just need to get used to you.
So, I (once again) take One day at a time.

  1. Hello, so sorry about the tinnitus and hope it is not a long-term ailment – and sending a prayer your way and encouragement that you will have patience and grace! I had some sinus issues on and off for a while and we were once on a special little trip – and I ate something I was allergic to and spent hours delaing with sinus issues. While I am mostly healed up – there are some triggers (like GMO food seems to be a trigger) and so I am glad I made the connections to what I eat and symptoms ….

      1. One more thing – it might be a good idea to have your “heavy metals” tested.
        Another thing that has happened is lead, cadmium, and all kinds of metals in certain foods (cinnamon, apple sauce, various brands of chocolates) and in water, or from cookware, etc
        And in my healing groups, numerous folks had balance issues and after they did an EDTA cleanse (with activated charcoal) there health improved greatly!

        either way, sending a prayer your way as you probem solve and invtestigate different things to figure out what is going on!

      3. yes – and one more note of encouragement – it does take detective work and insight from God – and as I look back, I am so grateful for what came my way (uninvited, as you would say) because it helped me clean up my terrain – and not only do I feel better than back then, but think I will be around a bit longer because of it.

  2. I have tinnitus, Lauren, and have for years. At first, it’s so disruptive, but over time, I’ve gotten better at ignoring it. I listen to classical music when I’m in bed getting ready for sleep. And I listen to background music in the house all day long. This takes away from hearing the tinnitus. A few days ago I was doing a guided meditation, and the message was to listen to all the sounds outside my meditation space: birds, maybe a breeze, maybe chatter, etc. All I heard was the swooshing inside my ears, but I just smiled and kept on. I hope your tinnitus goes away, but if it doesn’t, I hope you can learn to live with it gracefully and in peace. ❤

    1. Wow, Pam, I’m sorry you have it too. Just by sharing here, I’ve found that many of us in this community suffer with it. It’s more common than I thought. Thanks for sharing how you’ve dealt with it. It’s comforting to know that life can go on normally in spite of the whooshing and hissing. How strange, right? Anyway, thanks for your kind wishes.
