The Visitor

The conversation turned heavy
discussing God’s existence,
then noticing the time,
my husband opened the door
to retrieve our dinner,
Grub Hub, don’t judge,
a Friday convenience!
Then a moth slipped in
quietly, adroitly,
wearing lime green
and milky white.
It landed on a nearby chair,
and my husband spoke,
“Is it you, Mom?
It’s been 33 years,
and we still miss you so much.”
The moth lifted from the cloth
rising up into the air,
gliding out the door
from which it came.
It was Diane. We believe.
Her entrance was timely,
so perhaps, a reminder.
We gave tears freedom.
We know they’ll revisit
because the many used up
calendars over the years
are irrelevant.
His world was shattered
too soon, but the events
of that day are as vivid
as yesterday’s sunset.
Funny, how a little moth
on its own special journey
lifted our spirits that evening.

  1. Oh Lauren, this is so beautiful and timely. 🤗 Anytime I see something, even if it is the time on the clock, it brings back memories of many who have transitioned that makes me smile and move me to a sense of comfort and joy. Thanks for sharing such a lovely poem my dear. 🥰💖😁

  2. I’m glad the moth said hi, Lauren, and then flew out the door, toward a light, possibly, knowing moths. I remember when my father passed and I was so distraught. That day I had been cleaning out his apartment and one of the lights turned on, and then a faucet started. It had scared me enough I left. That night, he appeared in a dream or in that state between awake and dreaming, said “I okay, Curt,” and then turned and walked toward a light, disappearing into it.

    1. We were glad too, Curt, and although this visitor and moment was special, we have never experienced what you have. Wow! I’m sure it was comforting to you, knowing that he was okay. It’s tough not being about to see them anymore though. Life!

    1. Aww, thanks so much, Jane! We believe that too and this moment was special for us, but especially for Matt. Diane passed away when he was 30, way too young at 59, and too soon in our lives. It would be like our son and daughter experiencing the same. Unthinkable. We still get teary-eyed even after all these years. So that moth was symbolic. Love and hugs to you both! xoxoxoxo 💞💞💞

      1. Oh, Lauren, poor Matt and you too. A trauma like that becomes a thread that weaves through the rest of your lives. Bless our loved ones for their signs of loving energy, and bless nature. Xxxx 🩷🩷🩷🩷

  3. Such an inspiring poem, Lauren. What a special experience this must have been for the two of you. Beautifully crafted and sublime. When I see an owl, I’m reminded of my mom (she loved owls). Well done, my friend. 😊

    1. Thanks so much, Mike, for your wonderful words. It was a special experience, but especially for Matt. He was 30 when Diane passed away at the young age of 59. It would be like our son and daughter experiencing the same. Even after all these years, we still get emotional thinking about her and all that she has missed. Thanks for sharing your story about owls and your mom. I love owls too and that is special for you. Whenever I see hummingbirds, I think of my mom. Thanks again. I value your feedback. ❤️

      1. I wrote a beautiful story of a wild pheasant that visited me for many years bringing both beauty and comfort. “Ode to a Pheasant” which you can read in my blog if you wish.

  4. A beautiful sentiment Lauren. Your husband sounds like a mush head. I mean that as a compliment, as most men would never show that depth of emotion.

    Moth – er.

    1. Thanks so much, Resa, and I laughed at your mush head! But you’re right! He’s not afraid to show his emotions, and this moment was special. His mom passed way too soon and too young. She’s missed so much, and so have we. Moth-er, good one! xoxoxoxo

What a wonderful reminder of God’s presence, even in the smallest moments. That moth was surely a sign of love and peace. God works in mysterious ways to comfort our hearts. 💖🙏
