“Cora’s Quest” is a sweet story about a baby fawn who loses her way in the woods when she notices a caterpillar and being fascinated by it, she stops to say hello. Suddenly finding herself alone in the forest, Cora has to overcome her feelings of fear without the company of her parents, and find a way to stay calm in order to gather her courage and strength.
This lovely children’s book by Lauren Scott is beautifully illustrated, so little children will be able to enjoy the story being read to them while looking at very cute colorful images of Cora’s little adventure…

Please know there is no bragging in this post. I’m simply sharing my first-time experience and excitement participating in a book fair...
It turned out that I had a fabulous time at the Ukiah Children’s Book Fair on Saturday held at The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas! Cora’s Quest was in the spotlight! I did my first children’s book reading which went smoothly. I’m also thrilled that I sold 12 books! So exciting, I have to admit! 🎉
The event was well organized, so I offer a huge Thank You to all involved in making this fair a success. If I had to choose a word for this day, it would be ‘Kindness.’ Everyone was so nice! The authors received a goodie bag upon arrival and were asked to sign a poster board. Such a kind and welcoming gesture!
This book fair was a great opportunity to meet new authors and exchange business cards. It was also fun to carpool with Teri Drobnick and catch up. She and I met at the SF Writers Conference. Her charming book is Moving Day which I highly recommend.Inspired by the real-life story of moving a 139-year-old, 133-ton Victorian house six blocks, this picture book from a house’s perspective is a charming twist on a common childhood experience.

The Earth Store Hall came to life as the community came out to meet authors, celebrate books, reading, community and culture! Not only did the event feature dragon & lion dances but also taiko drumming, fan dances and a performance from Ballet Folklorico! There were exclusive food and drink options from Jyun Kang Restaurant and so much more.
For my first book fair, this was an awesome experience! Calm nerves, a relaxing and fun environment, and an opportunity to network, along with promoting Cora’s Quest. I’ve been nudged by Teri and a few other authors to join SCBWI, Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, and I finally took that leap yesterday. Ironically, I have about 4 children’s book ideas brewing! Not sure if they’re good, but I can’t wait to move forward once my Copper book has been released. And I can’t wait for the next book fair!
On a sidenote, I made a To-do list (all about writing projects) and it’s about 20 items long. So, at 2:30 am I woke up thinking about everything on that list! But I dozed off and on until the alarm went off, and during that dozing, a poem swirled around and around like clothes in a washer! Can you relate?
Dear Brain,
I know you want to think Because much needs to be done But now isn’t the time For you, me, or anyone.
The sky is sleepy dark Not a sound stirs outside Humans are slumbering And so must I!
I beg you to flip your switch To the preferred off from on I promise you’ll get your chance At the break of dawn

Copper gets colder in his older years, so he appreciates the extra warmth.
Back in December
There I sat, sipping Chardonnay, reading Celebrating Poetry by Cindy Georgakas, background noise was college football on the tube. I heard my husband cheering for his team. We sat together for an hour, talking about our days and the Christmas holiday to come. Couldn’t wait to see the kids. Then I wanted to get back to the book, and football was calling his name loud and clear.
I sat there as my dog snored, curled up on his gray, plush bed, the heat purred, keeping us warm, and the multi-colored lights on the Christmas tree glistened, occasionally winking at me.
A peaceful night – some would say unexciting. Ahh, but it’s the simple pleasures that become the biggest blessings…
After a January that brought shocking tragedy, the simple things become true gifts. For on that night in December, I had a loving husband to share an evening of wine and conversation, another holiday to celebrate, my senior puppy, heat to keep us warm, a roof over our head, a live Christmas tree to enchant us, music on our retro stereo, a great book to get lost in, a TV for entertainment at our fingertips, and homemade lasagna in the oven…
And so, as a new month begins, we continue to take one day at a time, to keep the victims of those tragedies in our hearts, to not let hope get lost in the shuffle of chaos, and to remember that we are fortunate to have these huge blessings.

Recently, Cindy was kind enough to surprise me with her wonderful review of my book, Cora’s Quest. So, please allow me to relish in her delightful words:
First of all, the cover is endearing and the story of Cora will surely delight every child that sits on your lap with wide open eyes, begging you to read it again and again. The best news is you will enjoy reading it to them when they say, “again” after the 10th time. Lol. I have 2 grandchildren 17 months old and both of them love “reading this book” (moreover, pointing at the different critters in the book). These are cherished moments when they are soaking in the world around them in these precious and formulating years and what better way than to introduce them to adventure and the trials and tribulations of life when veering off the path. Although they don’t understand this concept yet, they love turning the pages and haven’t ripped one yet. That is truly a win. In the meantime, the illustrations are beautiful and captivating as they are learning to talk and say “deer”. My hats off to you Lauren on a new genre which is near and “deer” (pun intended) to our hearts! I highly recommend stocking up on them for birthday parties etc. ~Cindy Georgakas

Subject change…Do you have an event coming up that you’re looking forward to? Let me know in the comments because I do! Four months ago, I registered for a writer’s conference, and it seemed like years away. All of a sudden, it’s next week, Thursday through Sunday, and I’ll be staying at the hotel for the entire conference. I can’t wait to soak up information and gain more knowledge from the workshops I’ll be attending. This is my first writer’s conference, so I’ll finally be able to check it off my bucket list. I’m sure I’ll share with you some great takeaways later this month! ✍🏻

As you move on from here, I hope love resides in your heart, joy blossoms, and challenging times lessen. This will be my last post for the year, then I’ll be going offline until January. It’s been a great 12 months with my health improving, many adventures throughout, and concluding with the publication of Cora’s Quest(even with the current snafu). I love spending time with all of you on your blogs, reading your beautiful poetry and stories, oohing and ahhing at your stunning photos, and traveling vicariously through your virtual itineraries. The support I receive for my writing and books is so appreciated, even I can’t find the words!
I searched high and low for my muse, but she has already departed on holiday vacation, so I didn’t write anything new for today. I’m sharing instead a poem that seems to circle back now and then. A Christmas Soliloquy
The noble fir smells heavenly Pervading throughout the room Lights twinkle in red and green Adding to its festive costume.
Stockings embellish the mantel Eager to be filled with treats Garland graces letters in gold Spelling out P.E.A.C.E.
Dangling to model icicles, White lights sparkle on eaves Ornaments shimmer on branches All this, the stuff of dreams.
But can dreams still come true When years become displeasing? Amidst the tears and heartache, Is there room for believing?
I have faith that joy weaves Its way through the pain Angels keep watch while Love Is the magic that remains.
I don’t know your story The details are yours alone But I do wish you Happiness That you may seize and truly own…

Cora’s Quest is a sweet story about a deer’s family outing. Cora is enjoying the forest until things change quickly, and now she needs to find her courage. A fantastic story to read to your little ones or for young readers to enjoy. The illustrations are beautiful and full of color, and the story is woven into a lesson that will resonate with children and their families. Here is an engaging passage: “An owl hoots/from its lofty perch./ The wind howls,/swirling around Cora./Grunts and growls/in the distance/steal her courage!/ They act like thieves!” I can easily recommend this story for young readers and those who read to them.

Now for some book reviews…I always seem to be long overdue in sharing book reviews, but the intention is always good! Reading has been a slow-going process, but I’ve read eight wonderful books that I’ll highlight in two separate posts. I give all of these books 5 glowing stars and can highly recommend…

Size Always Matters by Sally Cronin is a tool that can be used as reference repeatedly throughout the years. Cronin shares her story of reaching a point of literally life or death, choosing life. She mustered up the willpower and fortitude to lose 154 lbs while studying nutrition, and later, becoming a nutritional therapist and health consultant. I admire her for being transparent with her weight struggles in order to help others because it’s not always easy to shed the mask. She compiled a program that worked for her, so she lays it all out from page to page for us to absorb and utilize.
I remember when I was young, my dad used to say, “Good health is no laughing matter.” I couldn’t really grasp the full, profound meaning of his words at a young age because honestly, I thought I had all the time in the world to live! Now in my early sixties, I can attest to him being right. I’ve had my share of health issues, not food related, but I’m sure we all know that what we eat makes a difference for the better or worse. Cronin delves into the scientific formulas behind the simple concept of dieting, exercising, and hesitantly stepping on the scale to check those numbers – numbers that can make or break a day. She underscores the necessity to identify the physical, emotional, and mental attachments we have to food. She talks in depth about obesity and reiterates that it’s not about yoyo dieting. It’s about making a serious lifestyle change.
So, if you need to lose 10 lbs or 110 lbs, this book will serve as a beneficial guide to you attaining your goals. As a bonus, Cronin includes delicious recipes at the back of the book, which I intend to try, such as the Tomato Tostada, Baked Frittata, and Vegetable Casserole. Are you getting hungry? The last several months have been more of ‘grab pre-cooked dinners and go’ due to being busy and a hot, hot summer! Orion’s Gift by Anneli Purchase is a riveting story involving romance and intrigue in the beautiful setting of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. The author creates a vivid world with landscape and climate that she knows well from her visits to this terrain. I loved this detail and felt as though I was there. Sylvia and Kevin are easy-to-like characters but authentic carrying their own baggage, running from their abusive spouses. Their paths cross, sparks fly, but can their evolving love endure the danger lurking around each corner? Their fear and secrets from each other have a way of creating a gap. I enjoy a good romance, but this book isn’t your usual love story. Abuse is always a heartbreaking topic to read about or to discuss. However, as I turned the pages, I hoped that Kevin and Sylvia would find peace and happiness at the end. Orion’s Gift is the first book I’ve read from Anneli Purchase, and I know it won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Engaging, compelling, action packed told in a vivid setting with dialogue that flows smoothly to the end. I couldn’t put it down! I’ve read several books by D. L. Finn, both poetry and fiction, so I knew that Sounds in the Silence would be another can’t-put-it-down book. Finn engages the reader with this mystery written in a dual timeline spanning from the 1920s to the 1960s. We have the privilege of meeting Helen and Charles in 1924 who are madly in love, well liked, and enjoy throwing extravagant parties. They have a great time with their friends but insert Prohibition, and evil begins to loiter from the local church, keeping an eye on them. My concern for this lovely couple grew as I turned the pages. In the later era, Maria and Logan are a delightful, young couple who have a dream of owning a successful inn. They discover the perfect old house with a beautiful lakeside setting. However, its charm from decades ago has turned into dilapidation – livable, but renovations are needed before opening the doors to the public. While working diligently on the restorations, they realize they aren’t the only occupants living in the grand old house. A ghost seeks justice for a murder that occurred forty years earlier. Maria, especially, can’t ignore her curiosity, so she and Logan dive deep into uncovering what actually happened in the 1920s. But in doing so, they find themselves in danger. Their rescue pets add amusement and warmth to the tale and become useful in solving the mystery. Three-Penny Memories by Barbara Harris Leonhard is a powerful poetic account of the author’s life. Leonhard speaks of her own life-threatening illness at six years old, and then later on when she is unable to carry a baby to term. However, most of the poems provide a moving glimpse into a mother-daughter’s relationship. I was struck by Leonhard’s queries: “How can a daughter question her love for her mother while helping her to navigate the progression of Alzheimer’s? Can she learn to love the stranger that her mother has become?” These are questions that can only be answered by someone who has cared for an Alzheimer’s patient. In “Daughter, Like Mother” Leonhard writes, “I can relate, Mom, to how histories crumble/How memories burn off/like the dew in hot sun/Our paths align/You held me/Now I hold you.” While reading this emotional and beautiful memoir, I felt pain, joy, conflict, and devotion between mother and daughter. Leonhard’s memories make me pause, remembering when my brother-in-law had Alzheimer’s, and my sister was his caregiver. She is a retired nurse, but even so, caring for him in the various stages of the disease was both physically and emotionally challenging. The disease took his life eight years ago. This is a provocative collection about accepting and coping with the hand that life deals us – poetry that will truly touch your heart and soul.
