Nightfall Symphony

Friday evening provided inspiration for this haibun…

Heading north, airplanes soar in the clear blue, spotlighted by final sun-rays. The golden orb slowly turns in for repose. The sky transforms into a velvet cloak with a few winking stars. Temperatures fall for relief. A covert presence performs a chirping chorus, echoing through firs and oaks – nightly courtship calls. A welcomed soundtrack, soothing like ocean waves for inland people.

soaking in stillness
listening to nature’s song
crickets serenade

  1. My daughter who lives in Auburn CA relaxes after work in the evenings sometimes with her phone and a flight app that shows all the planes passing overhead and tries to identify those passing above as a way to wind down from her strenuous teaching job.

  2. I found the sound of crickets soothing. My wife and I stayed at a bed and breakfast last night and went to sleep and woke up to the sound of ocean waves and seals. The waves become white noise; the seals not so much.😊

  3. Ahh, I haven’t heard that serenade for … years, perhaps decades. Thank you for the reminder, Lauren!

I do remember their song, and that of the cicada as well.

  4. I used to look forward to the sound of the cicada encouraging me to sleep of an evening as a child but unfortunately as towns become cities and trees are sacrificed for housing those happy sounds are replaced by the sound of traffic.

    1. I understand, Ian, and it’s really sad. We live in a quiet neighborhood, and the main road is a mile away. So Friday night, it was clear out, beautiful, and the crickets serenaded us. I hope you get to hear more of nature’s songs.

      1. When we first moved to the Sunshine Coast the house we bought had trees and wildlife coming up to our back fence. Over the ten years we spent there before moving to a quiet retirement resort with lakes a suburb exploded around us with roads and houses. Now we are here because the university is only a ten minutes drive away the area has exploded into a bustling town with blocks of student housing everywhere but we still have trees and lakes with lots of birdlife in this resort. We are only twenty minutes drive from the beautiful Pacific Ocean with hundreds of miles of golden beaches.
