A Tropical Turquoise Dream

Spinning, spinning thoughts
as my head touches the pillow…
I’m not a tornado chaser,
so I let the turmoil run its course,
and it’s steadfast in its need
to not let me sleep.
And yet, I do, eventually…
I fall, wishing I could be
on the outside, watching…
because I would be proud
to witness me resting
every fiber of my being.
I’m living a tropical
turquoise dream
where a sea of smiles
flows farther
than the eye can see.
An invisible thread of
joy and love glide
from human to human.
The dark cloud of hate
becomes translucent,
only a mind’s nightmare,
a memory in history.
This turquoise dream
carries me away
to a place of peace,
warm sand beneath my feet,
songs of the ocean
bring serenity.
Hope lives and breathes,
gifting a sublime picture
of a brighter dawn
for all hearts with red blood.
Yes…
tomorrow will bring
a tangerine sunrise,
thriving teamwork
to finally unify
on wings of optimism.

Nightfall Symphony

Friday evening provided inspiration for this haibun…

Heading north, airplanes soar in the clear blue, spotlighted by final sun-rays. The golden orb slowly turns in for repose. The sky transforms into a velvet cloak with a few winking stars. Temperatures fall for relief. A covert presence performs a chirping chorus, echoing through firs and oaks – nightly courtship calls. A welcomed soundtrack, soothing like ocean waves for inland people.

soaking in stillness
listening to nature’s song
crickets serenade

Cozy Vibes

Stunning Aspens in Colorado

Sidewalks no longer sizzle
beneath summer’s intense embrace –
a sign anticipated by the leaves
with an abundance of grace.

Each year around this time,
they’re excited for the change,
like a model walks the runway,
new colors rearrange.

Shades of cranberries and squash
warmly enter stage left –
pinks and purples gladly accept
their much-needed rest.

A season that captivates when
cinnamon swirls in the air,
candles dance on mantels,
October declares, “Beware!”

Mother Nature encourages
soft sweaters and snuggling –
lights blink and wink on eaves
ambience for cuddling.

Pumpkin flavors entertain palates
in recipes galore
while on the thirty-first
carved faces frighten with gore!

So, whatever your fancy
in the midst of football and hayrides,
enjoy the fun festivities
and the blustery, cozy vibes!

Pink Lines

I remember when the pink lines on white stood out brilliantly like pink peppermint candy. Those lines said it all, spoke the truth – my life with my husband was about to change, slowly like pouring molasses. We had been married for two years, so we were ready to start a family. In less than nine months, we would receive a gift, a tiny human who would depend on us, the adults, to highlight the beauty that life offers and to protect her or him from harm.

When I thought deeply about what it would feel like to be pregnant and what was to come, the notion of pain grabbed my attention! I assumed that I had a low tolerance, but soon enough, I would learn more about my capabilities. Little did I know that in less than forty weeks, I would give birth naturally without medication, and then a second time a few years later, again without medication. I learned so much about myself.

Then my brain started working overtime, and you know what trouble that can cause. I was nervous about becoming a mom. Will I know what to do in each circumstance? Will my reactions be intuitive? What if I fail at the most important career in my opinion, being a parent?

The insecurities huddled together creating a force that couldn’t be accessed. They hurled at me like hurricane winds. Then the momentous day arrived; our baby was ready for the meet and greet. We had decided to let the gender remain concealed until we saw our precious bundle. After a 6 ½ hour labor, she entered our world with rosebud lips, and those insecurities scattered like ants.

My husband stood by the bed, comforting me in any way he could, and then he felt privileged to cut the umbilical cord. What an experience for him! It was his out-of-body moment just like giving birth to a little human was mine. In that instance of time, I became a mom, and he became a dad. New hats were immediately added to our wardrobes, along with new responsibilities. We would do our best so that our little girl would know how much her parents love her, so that she would feel safe.

Almost four years later, our family of four was complete when our son came into our world, bringing the same out-of-body experience for my husband and me. For the second time, we let the gender stay unknown. So when we saw our little boy, elation flowed through our hearts. We had a daughter and son; two tiny bundles of cuteness blessed our lives.

Looking back, watching decades soar by, flipping through memories in our photo albums remind us of how special it was to witness our daughter and son grow and learn, and turn into kind, hard working adults, making us proud a million times over. The laughs, the scary moments, the tears, even the minimal tantrums when they were young, I’d live them all over again, and so would my husband. And worrying about them doesn’t end just because they’re adults. They’ll always be our ‘babies’ regardless of their age.

The most rewarding though is the realization that we did something right because in their adulthood, we have strong relationships with them both. We’ve entered our mid-sixties, so the ‘kids’ are in their thirties. We talk and text all the time, the communication line remains open that travels in both directions. And since they live out of state, pursuing their dreams, paving their paths, we all fly east and west to visit as often as we can.

As I grow older, life seems to become shorter, so the love of my husband and children are the greatest, most priceless gifts. These three amazing people are my everything. Anything else that comes my way in the form of a blessing is a bonus.

First Breath

With every new miracle of life
answers aren’t scripted in the stars,
but I knew since your very first breath
my life would become yours.

Through innocent eyes and curious touch
each new discovery you shared,
your smile grew bigger than the sun,
your heart’s elation declared.

You stowed dreams in the clouds,
imaginings rose higher than the heavens.
Cuddling you in that first euphoric light
made me fall in love with you in seconds.

Life has blossomed into delight and wonder
in every part of its glowing greatness,
and with each ounce of my being,
my enduring love for you is ageless.

“Here’s Johnny!”

When we were visiting our son in Colorado, one place on his itinerary was Estes Park, and it’s in Estes Park where The Stanley Hotel is located, which is where The Shining was filmed, based on the book by Stephen King starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Although, the brilliant author disapproved of the film adaptation by Stanley Kubrick, even so, our walk around the grounds and inside the hotels was fascinating.

I’m not a horror fan, but I watched this genre in my teens. And yet, some images stick with me like super glue, unlike my husband who enjoys these movies for their creativity, costumes, and makeup, and who doesn’t take them seriously. Those horrific images that follow me through life such as from The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror are why I don’t watch them anymore. 😳 But now I’m going to contradict my words because I remember The Shining, vaguely, and I kind of want to watch it again now that we’ve walked through the hotel. Note, I said kind of.

“Honey, maybe we can watch The Shining on Halloween night,” I suggested. “But I need to have at least one light on.”

“Sounds fine, but I wouldn’t want any lights on. Where’s the fun in that?” He replied.

No decision between wife and hubby has been made yet. TBD.

There are several properties on the grounds, and we arrived in the evening, checking into our hotel, then enjoying a delicious dinner at The Post Chicken and Beer restaurant. We stayed at The Aspire which is part of The Stanley Hotel, so as guests, we were able to walk throughout the campus. I believe the hotel above is where the interior shots of the movie were filmed, but don’t quote me. I’m not versed in the history or details. Lights around the trees created a magical experience while we did what tourists do.

Can you tell I love lights?

Pulled from the hotel website:

  • “Sometimes human places, create inhuman monsters”
  • “The world’s a hard place. It don’t care. It don’t hate you and me, but it don’t love us, either”
  • “Redrum” (written on a door, which is “murder” spelled backward)
  • “I and others have come to a belief, that your heart is not in this. That you don’t have the belly for it,” said Delbert Grady to Jack.
  • “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”

I hope you enjoyed reading about the historic hotel, and the photos from our trip. If you’re a horror flick fan, kudos to you! You’re braver than me! I’m too much of a scaredy-cat! And believe me, if we watch The Shining, I’ll win! At least one light will be glowing! 👻

26 & 27

The much-loved patio welcomes
with its rustic warmth
and strands of string lights,
the bar stools invite us
to get comfortable for a visual feast
of rolling hills and redwoods.

His hand finds mine;
his words express that I’m most important,
in three months, glasses will clink
to celebrate 37 years –
the 26-year-old girl who met a
27-year-old guy. My words echo his,
but of course, our daughter and son
are the center of our life…

And the weather? Short sleeve
temperature, sublime, serene.
October brings
a summer night’s dream.
Silence flows in with its
special kind of conversation.

Fleeting minutes like these
aren’t taken for granted
because it’s not every day
our perfect dance partner
comes our way,
and although we grow older
and flaws become bolder,
our melody continues to play.

Light neighborhood chatter
drifts through the trees
with an occasional hummingbird
on its tail and a slight breeze.
The moon elegantly hangs
in her dazzling formal attire,
vying for our attention,
and she succeeds
because we are devoted fans.
Her glow mesmerizes –
our focus on her alone.
What a beautiful moment
to call our own.
