I wish the long haul
would’ve been in your heart.
My strings and your fingers
would’ve collaborated well, I could tell.
You learned the chords, major and minor,
your strumming had improved,
and your voice, smooth as honey.
I had faith in you.
Then another passion stole your hours…
writing, and I understand,
I really do. And yet, it’s just me
sitting in this corner of the room.
Most of the time, I don’t mind.
It can feel cozy and warm
when the sun rises high in the sky,
bringing light. But after sunset,
darkness creeps in,
giving me chills of loneliness.
Now and then, you dust me off
and that’s when I feel joy
in my body and fretboard –
the soft touch of a cloth,
so comforting.
I feel hope in each string
that you’ll gently pull me out
of my black case
and hold me in your arms…
to hear a verse, bridge, or melody,
to immerse our souls
into the notes that hold meaning…
but you simply wipe away the particles
that have landed
and walk out, leaving me
to ponder the mysteries
of humans. A painful task, I might add.
Hope never fades though
because I know songs
have always been a part of you,
so you’ll see, someday, you and me,
and music makes three.

This former guitarist and his three guitars approve of this poem. 🎸😊
Aww, music to my ears, Mike. 🙂 Maybe again someday, right? Thanks, my friend 🤗🎸
Excellent piece dear Lauren 👏👏👏👏
That’s so kind of you to say, Gabriela. Thank you! ❤️
My pleasure hon 🌹🌹🌹🌹
Wow. That was touching. I bet that’s how my son’s string bass felt when he abandoned it for the Army.
Thanks so much, Jacqui! I appreciate your lovely words, and your son’s string bass could very well feel the same. I hope ‘someday’ comes in the near future, but it’s up to me. ❤️
Aww Lauren, this is so lovely my friend.
Never say never !
I imagine you have a beautiful singing voice.
Lots of love and warm hugs to youxoxox
💖❤️💖❤️
Thanks so much, Maggie, and ‘never say never’ is so true. We shall see. Lots of love and hugs to you too. XOXO 💖🎸🎼🤗
You are very welcome, always 💕🤗💕
Yes, I think that is the best way to look at things .
Ilove and warm squishy hugs xoxo
Have a lovely day dear friend.💙🙏
💞💞💞💝
What a beautiful poem, Lauren ❤️
Thanks for your kind and lovely words, Esther. 💕
So very touching, Lauren. I’m cheering for your return to playing. 🥰
Thanks so much, Michele, on both counts. 🙂 💖
You’re very welcome! 💕🎶
I understand the pull of more than one creative interest, Lauren. I experience it too. A lovely and expressive poem.
I know you do, Robbie, so how do you divide the time to enjoy each one? Between life, work, blogging, and writing, the hours that are left disappear. 🙂 💞
And you and your music have not forgotten each other
No we haven’t, Beth. Thank you. I just hope ‘someday’ we’ll connect again. Music was a huge part of my past, but writing is a huge part of my present. Who knows what lies in the future? 💕
There might be a way to combine them in the future
I love your encouragement and optimism, Beth! 🙏🏻🥰
A lovely tribute to your need for music.
Thanks for your lovely comment, Liz! 🩷🎸
You’re welcome, Lauren!
You actually made me feel sorry for the guitar!
Then I think I did something right! Thanks, Anneli! ❤️
Oh yes, you did!
🥰🙏🏻🌻
It’s interesting as you were mentioning your guitar a few days ago, Lauren. A lovely acknowledgement.
I became inspired, Steve! 😁 Thanks, my friend! 🎸
Very cool!
😁😁
What a wonderful poem, Lauren and I’m certain mine feel the same way! So many things our heart and hands want to do and some get cast aside by life’s journey that keeps us on our toes.
🥰🙌🏽😘
Thanks so much, Cindy. Maybe when I retire, my guitar will get some attention. It’s so hard to divide time between many creative outlets. Maybe you’ll find your way back to yours someday too. 🥰🎸
Absolutely but like you we are busy girls and life will always be full. Yes, I’m happy now with my uke and thanks to the babies i play my 4 songs.. lol xo
I love this, Lauren! It reminds me of when I was learning guitar a long, long time ago.
Thanks, Dawn! I’m glad this resonated. I hope to pick it up again someday. 🥰
I remember when I first went to work in India I bought a sitar and had lessons on that. It was fun learning.
It’s always exciting to learn something new. I know I’ll pick it up again, just not sure when.
Ah, this poem has its own music, Lauren! Love it!
Such a beautiful comment, Wynne! Thanks so much! 🥰🎸
The personification is so tender that by the end, I could almost hear the faint hum of strings waiting to be strummed again.
That final line “you and me, and music makes three” sings even in silence.❤️👏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks so much for your wonderful and thoughtful comment, MMC 2.0. I really appreciate your kind words and your visit! 😁🎸
👍🏻🙂🙏🏻
It might never be to late to wipe the dust off your guitar, Lauren, I made a valiant attempt to learn the guitar after I retired. I was making slow progress but beginnings of arthritis in my hands made me purse other pursuits. The guitar, piano, and saxophone are my three favorite instruments.
I agree, it’s never too late, Pete, and I think it will happen when I retire. Right now, writing requires my full attention. And blogging, not to mention, two more books that I’ve begun to work on. I’m sorry you couldn’t continue with the guitar. But as we age, we have to roll with the punches and pain, and possibly, shift lanes. I always wanted to learn piano but never did. Thanks for chiming in!
It’s nice to have so many choices. How exciting that you’ve got new projects to work on. I took a piano class in college and loved it, assuming I’d come back to it someday. I have sung in choirs before and have a pretty good voice. Mostly, I just love music.
So you’ve had a musical past too! That’s great! I think we have the singing in common. When I was 9, I knew that I wanted to be a singer ‘when I grew up.’ There’s a story about it in my memoir: More than Coffee. I had moments in the spotlight and won awards when I was in high school and early college. Then I changed lanes. But music will always be a part of me. 🎼
Music is always part of me, whether natural or manmade. Lovely poem, Lauren.
That’s wonderful to know, Hazel. Thanks so much! Have a good day! ❤️🎸
My pleasure always, Lauren. Have a blessed Thursday to you! Hugs.
I can ‘see’ your playing, dearest Lauren….in the meantime, you play and create music with your words. Xxxxxxx ❤️😘✨❤️
Aww, what a lovely thing to say, Jane. Your encouragement is appreciated, my lovely friend. Hugs xoxo 🥰🎸🎼
🩷 Dearest Lauren, sorry, my ‘your’ should have been ‘you’….! 🩷😘🩷
I understood, Jane! I still wish we could edit our own comments on other blogs. Sigh. But no worries. Hugs and lots of love! xoxoxoxoxoxo
Love this poem!
Thanks so much! I’m happy to hear that!
You need to play with the poor guitar more!
Haha! I can tell my poem ‘struck a chord’ Binky! 🙂 It will probably happen when I retire. Right now, writing and blogging require my time. 🎸😁
I love the perspective from the guitar. I learned piano, and guitar a long time ago, and not that my interest dwindled, but life had other plans. Our love of music sings through our written words. 🎶💞
Thanks, Eugi, and you’re right: life has other plans. I love this line: “Our love of music sings through our written words.” Thanks for your beautiful words! ❤️🎸
You’re welcome, Lauren. 💖✨
So nice Lauren ❤️! I really like when you write poem from another perspective, it’s always a very good one. Past loves remain in our hearts and we know we can come back to them at any time. Have a great day!
That’s so kind of you to say, Marie. I like trying these personification poems when inspiration hits me. 🙂 I love what you wrote about past loves, so true and reassuring. Thanks so much, dear friend, and wishing you the same. ❤️
Ohhhh….
What a stunning conclusion to this piece, Lauren! I love it…you and me…and music makes three…
Love it! 💝
Aww, thanks, Vicki! I’ve been thinking about my poor guitar lately and became inspired. Why not give this beauty a voice? 🙂 I always appreciate your feedback. ❤️🥰🎸
So good! 😉❤️😉
Too kind, Vicki! 🥰🎼💕
😘😘😘
😎😍😘
Beautiful and heartfelt poem Lauren. Truly touching and wonderfully written.
Wow, thanks, Willie! Before I clicked ‘publish’ I wasn’t sure about this poem. So your words and all the feedback here mean a lot. 🙏
You are very welcome. It truly is beautifully written and expressed.
Thanks again, Willie, and I hope you have a wonderful day! 😊
That’s lovely with a unique perspective.
Thanks, Elizabeth! I appreciate your kind comment! 🥰🎸
Beautiful and so wistful, Lauren. I think the guitar needs a little “me time” with you. Give it some hugs for me.
Thanks, Diana, and I will give it a hug for you. I’ll probably pick it up again when I retire (soon). Right now between work, writing, blogging, working on new books, and life, there aren’t enough hours. Anyway, thanks and hope all is well! Hugs to you! 🥰🎸
Guitars are patient. I do hope that when time allows you find your way back to playing music.
That they are, Diana! And I really believe I will. Hugs 🍁🧡
Loved the unique poem, well done!
Thanks, Pooja! I’ve been thinking about my guitar lately and became inspired to write. 🥰
You’re most welcome! 😊
What a fun and creative verse Lauren. Maybe the poor guitar needs a new home. 😊
Thanks for stopping by, Brad, and there will be no new home for this poor guitar. We will get reacquainted soon! 🙂 Thanks for your kind words about the poem too!
😊
Excellent poem dear Lauren. Too good 😊😊
Thanks so much, Kamal! 🥰🌷
Beautiful poem, Lauren. I have a guitar but struggle with the tuning. I just found an app by Fender to help me with that so hopefully I can learn to play it.
Thanks so much, Edward. And it’s good to know about the app. Maybe someday I’ll try it. I hope it helps you. 🎸
You’re welcome, and I hope it works too. 🤞🏼
You are always welcome dear Lauren. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🤗
❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️
This is simply delightful!
Thanks so much, Annette! ❤️
Lol, I feel sorry for the guitar. So cool that you spoke with its voice.
Do you play it? I know you sing.
You could be writing songs, Lauren! OMG!
The band is downstairs playing “Watchtower” right now. I’m surprised to hear Norm playing a slick lick on his … well one of his electric guitars. Then again, I’ll bet the music makes him feel better. I think when we do what we love, it makes us feel good, even when we feel bad.
xoxoxoxoxxo
If you feel sorry for the guitar, then I did something right, Resa. 🙂 I love writing personification pieces. So I was thinking about my guitar, how it must feel abandoned, then a poem from its perspective came to mind. I didn’t expect such a wonderful response, but I’m grateful.
I played a little, and maybe some of my poems could be converted into songs. But I’m so busy with writing and now with 2 more books in progress that the time isn’t there.
By the way, I’m guesting on another podcast next month to talk about King Copper, and I just read Cora’s Quest at our local library yesterday. It was a success! So I’m happy and grateful for these opportunities.
It’s great that Norm plays, and you’re right about doing what we love makes us feel good in any mood. I hope hubby is feeling better too. xoxoxox
It’s a wonderful thing that we have choices in life, especially creative choices.
2 more books, wow! So, like one poetry and 1 a children’ book…OR?
❤️xoxoxo
You guessed right, Resa. The children’s book that I was going to work on this year before Copper passed. And I have about 100 poems wanting to be in a book. Not sure if all will make it, but I’d like to pitch both or at least the children’s story at the SFWC next year. I need to get to work. 🙂 But I’m still promoting King Copper and Cora’s Quest. xoxoxoxo
xoxo💓❦🌹🌟❤️
Keep on with what you are doing. Once the holidays are over, and the momentary quiet of the the New Year happens, you will focus n the 2 new books, big time!

Awesome you have a guitar and can play Lauren! I’d love to be able to play the guitar! Xx
Peggy loved her guitar and has a voice like honey. Unfortunately, arthritis in her fingers stopped her playing days. I think her Martin misses her as well.
I’m sorry to hear that Peggy can’t play anymore, Curt. I think her guitar and mine share the same emotions.
