November

A tall cedar pitches its pods
onto the smooth driveway,
footsteps crunch on fallen foliage

a broom sweeps, piles grow
for hoisting into the bin

but the tall cedar pitches again
oh, this lovely season!

the air turns crisp for layering,
wiping sweat away
from summer’s fever,
raindrops soothe flaccid petals

early evenings surrender
to nightfall,
but set out the candles!
Play Sinatra on vinyl
and sink into coziness

Will you remember
this sweet November?

    1. Ahh, that’s wonderful to hear, Anneli. I love this time of year, but it’s been hard to feel joyful with our loss and with what’s going on in the world. But an uplifting poem was needed, or at least for me. Thank you! ❤️

      1. It takes time – a long time – to sort out how to deal with our losses. It was years before I could talk about my late mom without choking up, but I think of her as being with me all the time, in my heart, in my head, and so it’s easier to bear. We each find our own way in time. You’ll find yours.

    1. That’s true, Liz. But sometimes things happen out of our control either personally or in the world that make it even harder to find the sweetness. But I get it. And I’m trying, so I thought an uplifting poem would be nice. ❤️

  1. I remember that accurate description of November in the US as I had to frequently fly in that time of the y ear from the tropics to attend meetings and found the contrast hard to adjust too. Washington DC can be very cold that time of year.

  2. Wow. This is very good and what an exceptional poem here Lauren. As I always say, you are quite talented as a Writer and Creative🙏

I like this part “Early evenings surrender to nightfalls” and this poem accurately describes the month of “November” that is known for raindrops, summer and the scorching heat🌄🌅🔥

    1. Hi Mthobisi, you always write the kindest comments that I appreciate very much. I’m so glad you enjoyed this poem that exemplifies this month. Thank you so much, and I hope your month has been a good one. 🍁🙏🏻🍁

  3. I love this time of year.
I will remember November, especially now, thanks to your poem
    Be well, Lauren! 🧡🍁🍂🧡
    (some kisses for Copper) xxxx🧽🧽🧽

    1. I do too, Resa, and you are so kind! Thanks for your lovely words about my poem, and have a wonderful weekend ahead. Sending love and hugs from Copper (slobbery kisses too) and me! I love those sponges. They make me laugh! 😂🧡❤️🍁

  4. Lauren, your words leave me with a warmth, and, long-belated with apologies, my own expression of just how much your perspective and literary presence touches us all so deeply. It is indeed a cherished time of year, despite its abundant chill. We celebrate your gift and the delivery of literary word craft which is so uplifting, so full of promise, and a reminder of all that we have to remain happy and fulfilled for in our lives.

May 2024 bring you many cherished moments, dear Lauren. You have indeed enriched our lives with all that you have expressed through your writing over the years. Be so blessed always.

    1. Thanks for your amazing comment, Don, and for your visit. And I hope 2024 has been a good year to begin with for you. My father-in-law passed away on Halloween, so the end of last year was stressful, and this year I’ve had some health issues. But I’m doing okay! Of course, I’m behind on reading blogs, but that will probably never change. Take care, my friend, and thanks again!
