I know this…

We don’t live forever,
I know this,
just as sunlight and moonbeams
can’t shine simultaneously,
but sometimes I feel
like he and I
will transcend the inevitable.

Imagining the opposite
is unimaginable
because it means one of us
will be left alone with our tears
to sweep up the shattered pieces
of our hearts
in every room we step into.

It means going solo
through
every sunrise,
every sunset.

It’s okay to daydream,
isn’t it?

It’s alright to feel
we’ll live forever,
isn’t it?

What is life
without dreams,
without fantasy?

Reality hides
in the shadows,
I know this,
but until life changes,
I’ll live in my fantasy,
knowing he’ll be beside me
eternally.

  1. So stunning photos of very Lovely Couple and Best Wishes 💐🙏❤️ The poem so touching
And just truth on the lines 👏🏼👍 Life is about enjoying the journey not the destination 😃❤️
God’s grace always with dear you two and well wishes my friend 🌺🥀🙏

  2. Wow, a touching and entertaining poem Lauren. I like it and it is all about friendship and love♥👏

Also, I like the introduction, it is really good, let me quote it”I KNOW WE WON’T LIVE FOREVER, JUST LIKE THE SUNLIGHT AND MOONBEAMS WON’T SHINE SIMULTANEOUSLY”, WHAT? THAT WAS A HIT INTRO🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Lastly, I agree that what is life without dreams and goals

  3. That is so touching Lauren.
I had tears just reading you – as I tried to imagine how hard it’d be to live without a loved one.
So keep dreaming Lauren, anyway it’s good for the body and the soul.
Wishing you many many years of love together. ❤️

    1. Thanks so much, Marie. Your words are beautiful and comforting. We talk about the “What if?” sometimes, and as much as it’s a sad topic, it inspires poetry. Yes, we have to keep dreaming, and I appreciate your wishes too. Sending hugs and love! xoxo

    1. Thanks, Diana, and Cheers to daydreaming! We have some friends who have lost their spouses, so now and then the topic comes up, and we get a little teary-eyed. Regardless, a poem was born. 🙂 Hugs 💞

  4. This poem brought tears Lauren… Its exactly how I feel about my hubby…
    “It’s alright to feel
    we’ll live forever,
    isn’t it?”……..

    “Reality hides

    I know this,
    but until life changes,
    I’ll live in my fantasy,
    knowing he’ll be beside me
    eternally.”….
Beautifully expressed as I wipe more tears… ❤ Love and Hugs my friend.. ❤

    1. Hi Sue, sorry to bring tears, but I knew I wasn’t alone with my feelings. My hubby got tears too when he first read it. Thanks for your beautiful words, my friend, and let’s keep daydreaming. Love and hugs to you! 🩷🤗

  5. Lauren, this is such a beautiful tribute to the love you and your husband share. My sweety and I often have similar, difficult conversations about one of us being alone some day… ❤️

    1. Thanks so much, Steve. I think as we get older it’s natural to talk about the inevitable even though it brings tears when we do. My hubby got tears when he read the poem. I’m glad you have the same kind of special relationship. 🤗

      1. You’re welcome, Lauren. I’m so glad you have that, too. 🤗

The conversation reminds me of a heart-rending poem quoted by Francis Weller in his excellent book ‘The Wild Edge of Sorrow’:

        “‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
        A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be,
And oh, to lose.
A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing
to love.
For your life has lived in me,
your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.”

  6. It is more than ok to live in a fantasty sometimes, Lauren! I do that too! I don’t like thinking about sad things, like dying, if I can help it!

  7. Le sniff! I love love!
I’m in the same life partner boat you are.
I have had the same thoughts.

You have penned the feelings well. Thank you, dear Lauren!

    1. I know, I got teary eyed just writing this, Resa. I’m glad you know how I feel. We talk about this topic now and then, and so a poem was born. It’s a tough subject, so let’s keep daydreaming! Thanks so much for your kind, kind words! Hugs!

    1. I know, Debby, and my heart still aches for you. This topic comes up occasionally, and so I wrote this poem. Thanks for your advice too. For the most part, that’s what we do. But then the what ifs seep into our minds. Hugs ❤️

  8. Lauren, I feel this so much and want the same!! Like you, I know it is not the reality. I live in the moment and try to ignore the inevitable. Thanks for putting this common experience into words. It is beautiful ⚘️
    Many Blessings
    Lisa xoxo

    1. I’m glad you understand how I feel, Lisa. It’s a topic that surfaces in our conversations, so this poem came to mind. But like you said, we have to live in the moment and not live in those thoughts. Thanks for your lovely words. ❤️ xo
