A Trio of Sorts

An icy gust shadowed him
around the corner,
grazing his earlobe and
sending chills across the way
His Italian wool threads
exuded perfection
even as he slid into leather –
heading for someplace
he labeled important

Then birdsong matched
her mood and with her cell
on speaker,
passersby became privileged
Her long coat sufficed,
but she tightened the belt
as the gust wrapped itself
around her like a python
When the hailed driver
met the curb,
she smugly skimmed
over the back seat
until satisfaction found her –
phone chat uninterrupted

And across the way,
huddled against the
weathered building,
he imagined a handful
of warmth
yielded from his worn beanie
and threadbare coat –
layers of blankets
occupied his dreams
No complaints fell
from his chattering teeth
Instead, his eyes were alert
and his mind formulated wishes

  1. As John said – excellent contrast between the points of view. So sad, that the homeless remain invisible – and are left shivering in the cold (literally and metaphorically). Nicely written, Lauren.

Hope you have a relaxing weekend!
    💞 Hugs 💞😊

    1. Thanks so much, Betty, and I agree with you, too. My weekend’s been very nice, relaxing and productive. 🙂 Hope yours has been good, too! Hugs back! 💗🌸😍

      1. Glad you’ve had a nice weekend, Lauren. It’s been good here too. Weather is a bit too hot, but still enjoying. Today was a “remembrance” for my son (he would’ve turned 46 today) so it’s been an emotional day….
        Hugs! 💕

      2. Thank you for the virtual hugs, Lauren, and I appreciate your caring. Am okay today, though. The offer goes both ways, though, if you should ever want to talk. 💕 Hugs! Hope you’re having a good Monday. ❤️❤️ (Also hope you aren’t experiencing any smoke from the fires in your state. So frightening to read about! Take care, my friend.) ❤️

      3. I’m glad you’re okay and thanks for the offer, too. No smoke here, but they’re so frightening without even being directly affected. 😦 Hope you have a nice evening…💕💕💕🌷

      4. I was watching on t.v. earlier…just unbelievable. Wild fires everywhere are so much larger and harder to contain these days. (We have some smaller fires in our state…. Not getting any smoke here yet, like we did last year.) Really need rain! It’s been a couple of months. Hope you get some down there soon.
Have a good afternoon and evening, Lauren. ❤️💕💞 Hugs!

      5. The scary thing is that it’s only July. We still have a couple of hot-weather months ahead. I just pray that they’re all contained very soon, along with keeping the firefighters safe and everyone else involved. Wishing you the same! Hugs, too! 💗💗💗

  2. Wow, such an amazing poem filled with ‘Contrast’ yet woven expertly together in a wonderful dialogue of descriptive writing, that set the scene so clearly in my mind..
    Very cleverly written Lauren..
Have a perfect weekend my friend.. Apologies it has taken me so long to land here. I have been indulging in some ME time.. with No distractions..
    Love and Blessings.
    Sue ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Thanks for your insightful words, Sue. I appreciate them very much, and no apologies necessary. I’m happy to see you but also glad you’re enjoying some ‘me’ time, as well. It’s been a great weekend, and hopefully, yours has been the same. 🙂 Love and blessings to you also dear friend…💗🌼🌻

  3. This poem reveals how people in close proximity can spin in private orbits, unaware and unaffected of the needs of others. It makes me wonder what’s necessary to get folks to be involved. Excellent observations, nicely described.

  4. You´ve woven a wonderful poem out of detailed observations, Lauren. All those tiny worlds we seem to live in like little bubbles without skimming one another, apparently disconnected and yet one big whole after all. Beautiful, Lauren, just beautiful! xoxo ❤

    1. Thanks so much, Sarah, and I love your description, too. I’m still hoping the disconnect will transform into a reconnect sometime in the near future. 🙂 Thanks again, my friend, and wishing you a lovely Sunday. Hugs ❤❤❤

  5. I imagined a secret assignation at first . Then I read the last verse and felt the sadness a well explained contrast. It touched me Lauren. We see more and more lost souls on the streets these days .💜💜

    1. I like where your perspective began though, Willow, very clever, and I’m glad this poem touched you, even though it portrays a heartbreaking issue. Thanks for your kind words, and maybe someday, more souls will be found and will find their way into the comfort of homes. 💕

I appreciate your thoughts!
