The House on the Hill – #fiction #99-word stories

“I swear evil lurks in that house, Jim,” Patty said to her husband. From their patio, the ginger dwelling is in full view.

“Honey, it’s your imagination. They’re on vacation.”

“I don’t think so. I’ve seen him coming and going, but she’s been nowhere in sight.”

“You know it’s not our business, Sweetheart.”

Just then, three police cars and an ambulance sped up the street and right into the sloping driveway.

The next day…

“Patty, you were right! I heard on the news the husband was arrested for murder. His wife’s battered body was found in the attic. Geez!”

This story is not like my usual uplifting writings I share, but like Michele Lee says, “It’s good to stretch our writing wings.”

Giggles

We used to hear them,
giggles in the distance,
running behind bushes,
hiding against stucco.
Houses on the block, vacant?
Not devoid of humans,
but maybe lacking
excitement to frolic
beneath sun’s rays,
sing with the robins,
gaze at

acrobatic squirrels
in the tall oaks.
Perhaps, sneaky screens
stole that amusement,
those precious,
memory-making moments
spent outdoors.

Middle of Day

Chimes ring contrasting to
hammer against nail – whack!
Homes get makeovers
why not shine the dull?
Owl keeps watch with golden eyes
its presence reticent to surroundings
Birds glide in now and then for a snack
residual seed drifts to concrete
Leaves flutter from gentle nudge
of summer’s breeze
Footsteps on hardwood walk several feet
was their energy worth it?
Clinking of glass on glass adds rhythm
but not for cutting the rug
Voices remain soundless
where have all the people gone?
