Before darkness settled in and sun bid farewell
I took a drive not far from home going fairly slow
What happened next I’m reluctant to tell
Yet the story has been told; others already know
She darted out from nowhere I did see
to this day I wonder how it all could be
Poor little one was naive though surely in control
She was unaware of the danger lurking outside
Her cries echoed through my heart and soul
Provoking tears and sadness deep inside
We simply met at the wrong time and place
And departed with my many prayers of grace
I wish to rewind that awful hour in my day
To save an innocent doe from unwanted sorrow
Let a little one run freely and be on her way
For a much, much brighter tomorrow
The suffering is over now but images aren’t kind
They lie still so fresh in my mind

(This happens all the time where we live because deer are in abundance. Many people don’t like them because they eat the gardens. Well, yes, I suppose that is an annoyance but I’m a little different. I love watching them walk gracefully down the street and always hope that car and deer don’t meet. After many years of living here, my car has never come in contact with one. This time though, the deer hit me on the left front side by the headlight. She was tossed into the gutter, hurt very badly and suffered about an hour before she was put out of her misery. I knew it wasn’t my fault. She truly did fly out of a backyard on my left side, out of the blue, and into my car all in a matter of seconds. But it was a very heartbreaking hour and I wouldn’t leave until she was taken care of…sadly this happens so often that it’s not a big urgency. We live in their territory and they are the innocent ones..)
Pure and subtle… Nice thought process…
Thanks so much for your comment and visit!
Events like this are very sad.
They really are, Ben…
So sad Lauren but a total accident, although knowing that doesn’t make it any easier does it. I feel for you and the animal too. I hope it has helped, sharing this lovely poem. ❤️ Xxx.
I’m okay, Chris, but it was a sad time and I’m glad I wrote about it, which did help, too…I’m definitely more alert around here even though I was to begin with. I think they’re out and about earlier in the days now also because of the drought…Thanks for your comforting words…♥
Lauren more than you’ve said here through your beautiful words, I can understand the sorrow you feel and the guilt behind these words. Though, it wasn’t your fault, I truly agree with you that animals that those deers are the innocent ones. God gave both animals and men the equal share of earth. But you see how different the situation has become. Man wants to be everywhere, just everywhere…And, this is the man cause of misery, nothing more than a recipe for disaster. We are not exploring nature; we are intruding it….without the consent of those innocent animals…Had they the power to speak, they would have requested us long ago to leave them alone…
Anyways, that’s enough of me…Just couldn’t stop myself from sharing what i feel for nature. By the way, I respect your thoughts and loved your way of expression…I am too a poet…Cheers!!
Ricky, I agree with you about man intruding their habitats…it’s the way of the world but still sad when events like this happen…thanks so much for opening up and expressing your feelings, I appreciate it along with your kind words and visit…I will visit your blog soon, too! Have a wonderful Sunday…
Thank you dear, once again for your reply. I haven’t been posting anything on my blog for sometime. I am currently working on a book, and work as a business writer in India. Your beautiful poetry made me visit your blog. I do write poems when I get some time, and when I feel like expressing. Here’s a link when I posted my first three poems online…

Nothing much after that..Just writing on my notepads…not posted anything online…as I wanted to print a book. Any ways see you soon..Much to talk about..Cheers!!
You’re very welcome, Ricky, and I wish you all the best with your book! I’m not blogging right now either because I’ve returned to college after 36 years. So my daughter graduated with her BA in June, my son will transfer to a univ. next year, and I’m back doing homework. 🙂 Anyway, I’ll check out your poems soon and keep your dreams alive.
So sorry you had to experience that. We use to see deers along the Garden State Parkway. When I went to visit my sister on the 4th, I noticed they put fences up.
Thanks, Kim, and good for those fences being put up! I think the drought is bringing them out earlier than normal so we have to be on the lookout even more…xx
Such a beautiful homage to that innocent life [and all those who have similar fates] and I’m so sorry this happened to you. Happened to me many years ago with a cat [she miraculously survived] and since then I have grown extra eyes and am always alert even for flies[!] flying by while driving even though I realize even this is no insurance.
Thanks, Marina! I definitely have grown more eyes since then even though I’m always alert! 🙂 It’s so sad but unfortunately the collision of animal and machinery happens all too often. I’m glad the cat survived…many hugs! ♥
It is much the same here. There is an over abundance of deer because there are two few predators. But I still don’t like to see any of them harmed since we’ve taken over most of their range.
Very nicely written, Lauren.
Ahh, the circle of life. I get it, but I don’t like to think about it either. 🙂 And then to have man invade their territory and them getting hurt, more sadness. Thanks for your kind words, Binky…
There are so many deer here too. They are not afraid of the suburbs and have no issue darting in front of oncoming vehicles. So sorry, Lauren.
Thanks, Michelle. They’re just not aware of humans and the machinery that is dangerous to them…xx
Aww Lauren I felt this. Though it was not your fault I understand. A dog ran into the street and into my car years ago. A story to long to tell hear but definitely one of the worst days ever. Remember every detail like it were yesterday. Be at peace.
Thanks so much, Ericka, and I’m so sorry to hear about your event with the dog. Since I’m a dog lover and owner, I probably would’ve been a bigger mess had that happened. I agree, these events fade but they don’t leave our minds completely…blessings to you…
How sad and poignant. Your caring heart shines through, as always.
Thanks so much, Jean. It helps to write about even sad events in our lives…xxx
A sad post Lauren, so sorry you had to experience this, it is hard to express the feelings knowing you have inadvertently hurt a beautiful animal, the same thing happens here in Australia with Kangaroos.
It’s not the poor creatures fault, mankind has encroached on their natural habitat, most people know this and take care, but unfortunately these delicate creatures don’t think like us.
Continue to Love and enjoy the beauty of these animals Lauren, animals do understand a caring Heart.
Thanks for your wonderful comment, Ian, and I can just imagine this happening with kangaroos, too…so sad…yes, I’ll continue watching them walk down the street with grace, families together or a solo doe or buck and will continue to hope that cars have the ability to see them and avoid, if possible. I wish I had had that chance…have a lovely Sunday, my friend…
It’s the same here too, Lauren. We have lots of deer on the island, and when we travel at night they are in abundance along the main road. We haven’t hit one yet.
I’m sorry that deer jumped out of the yard like that, but I’m glad you stayed with her til she was taken care of.
Much love and hugs xoxo
Thanks so much, Deb…this was a first for me after all these years and I just wish I would have had the chance to avoid her instead of her hitting my car. It’s all a part of life but doesn’t lessen the sadness…other neighbors came out and waited with me, which I thought was very nice. And there was no way I could just leave; I had to wait until she was taken care of…sending love and hugs your way, my friend…xo
I’m so sorry you had that traumatic experience, Lauren. It wasn’t your fault. You’ve written a beautiful, poetic tribute to that deer.
Thanks so much for your comforting words, Nadine…xx
You’re most welcome, Lauren. Anytime. 🙂
Sad. It happens here, too, in the Sierra Nevada–and also with bears!
Oh, I can’t even imagine hitting a bear or having one hit you! They’re all beautiful creatures and we need to watch out for their safety since man has invaded their territory…
