“IT”

It is what it is –
or so we say,
but who really knows
what it is today?
Where does it live?
What does it think?
Does it have eyes that blink?
Would I miss it
floating in mid air
like an atom with flare
or does it sit on concrete
in cold weather and heat?
What a thing to ponder,
This it we claim to know
Does it stretch to the sky
or lie very low?
Does it speak words, I ask,
with a face to see
or does it convey mystery
through a dark colored mask?
How perplexing,
digging up truth
about this infamous it
Does anyone have a clue?
Is there something we
can do?
If not,
Then I bid you
a friendly
Adieu!

  1. only you could have written this poem on ‘ it’
what a beauty…had so much fun
oh yes there are things it can’t do…it can’t write like you or spread happiness like you do
or hug you like i do 🙂

    1. Oh, Soma, your comment is the best ending to my workweek! I’m so glad you liked this; I wrote it awhile ago, but wasn’t sure if it would be too silly! Your kind words lifted my spirits even higher! Thank you and big hugs to you, too! 🙂

This is really good, Lauren! As someone who confesses to despise that currently popular phrase (“it is what it is”), I read this with great interest! Happy Friday–have a blessed weekend! love, Caddo

    1. Awww…thanks, Caddo! Isn’t it funny how phrases start and are used without any thought or validation? I thought this was too silly to post, as I wrote it awhile ago. But, for lack of not having anything for this glorious Friday, I thought “why not?” I’m glad you liked it and wishing you a wonderful weekend, too! Love ya, Lauren

    1. Thanks, Gabby, it struck me how we say things without really thinking about them, just because they’re the thing to say! I’m glad I made you smile! 🙂

    1. After I read your poem, I thought of mine, which I had written awhile ago, but wasn’t sure about posting “it!” Then I stopped thinking and just did it! It’s funny how these phrases just come along and we all join in without wondering their origin! xoxoI

  3. It is what it is
I agree. It is the single most abstract, nearly meaningless saying that has ever been uttered.

Great poem. I look forward to reading more of them.

    Tim

  4. How thoroughly fun, your poem. So already I know just a very little bit about you and would like to learn more. I will enjoy following you and reading your posts. Thank you for the beauty, wit, and creative style you bring to your poetry!

LOL, love granbee’s response, because that was exactly mine, too! Hehehe. Thanks so much for the big grin I’m wearing after reading this, Lauren – so glad you posted “It” 🙂 xoxox

  6. The omnipresent ‘it’. I love this, Lauren–I think it speaks to the unknowns in our existence, and therefore our faith. But it is so much fun too!

And then there is ‘they’ and–my pet peeve–‘everyone’. But they are generalizations, while ‘it’–especially as you have poeticizes IT–is very expanding, very Zen.

    1. Thanks, Diane, and my thoughts, exactly, too! It, they, Everyone, all these “things or phrases” that are “there” but why and how? So many questions…thanks for stopping by! xx

    1. Aww…Sandra, I love it! Thank you for the smile and wonderful rhyme yourself! I am so far behind on reading and haven’t had much time lately on the blog. So I’ll be over your way soon! I hope all is well with you, my friend! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Wendell, I’m glad you enjoyed this bit of wit! 🙂 At first, I thought it was too silly, but decided to click that button anyway! I hope your weekend is wonderful, too!
