The Timepiece

To
the teen,
Edward was
like a grandpa
and dear friend to the
boy’s grandma, Mabel, at
a time when she persevered
through an unforgettable loss.
Sounds of war vibrated ruthlessly.
Women were placed in subordinate roles.
A pocket watch, timeless in its essence,
a present, golden in tone and worth.
Locomotive chugs down the tracks,
a couple turns makes it tick,
heartbeat of fifty years.
Poignant history,
memories to
visit now
and then…
time.

    1. Aww, thanks so much, Diane! My husband brought the watch out the other night and I was inspired to write. I love that locomotive too. Edward was a machinist on locomotives in the 30s, 40s, and 50s, so had a strong affinity to all trains. I’m so glad you enjoyed this bit of our family history. ❤️

    1. Wow, John, is that perfect timing or what (no pun intended)? 🙂 My husband brought the watch out the other night and I immediately thought to write about it. I’m sure your daughter will treasure your grandfather’s watch as well. ❤️

  1. Etheree poetry, stellar. Ekphrastic, stupendous by all angles in that this has heart and memory: love love love this. Thanks for sharing. Just beautiful, dear, Lauren. Thanks.

    1. Thanks for your wonderful words, Selma! I’m wrong about ekphrastic poetry though because that style involves a work of art. 🙂 So Liz pointed out that this is more of photo poetry. It’s good to learn something new, and to step out of our comfort zones. 🙂 Thanks again, dear friend. ❤️

  2. In times passed that was an item considered quite expensive and therefor a treasured item to be passed along to the next generation. In a sense we do that with the children we produce.

Lauren, a beautiful poem. Heartfelt. The pocket watch is beautiful too, wrapped in Edward and a piece of your family history. xXx 🌹💕🌹

    So many wonderful comments!
    Thank you Honey.
Brings back so many great memories of Edward and Grandma…and the gift 💝

    1. Thanks so much, Diana. That’s exactly what I wanted to convey. And this is my first attempt at an Etheree poem. Not easy, but I plan to try again. It’s fun to step out of the box. 🙂 Have a good day! 💗

  5. Time is so precious and so are memories, as well as things that means a lot for us.
Very nice poem Lauren. We feel your care in it.
And well done for a new form of poem! You did great !
    Have a lovely weekend 💗

    1. Thanks so much, Marie. I appreciate your lovely words. It’s always fun to try a new format, but this one wasn’t easy. 🙂 And you’re so right about time and memories. Have a lovely weeekend too! ❤️🌺

  6. This brings back the most moving moments of my own family and relatives long lost to the heavens above. I have framed pictures/portraits throughout my home that are such a heartwarming reminder that those you love are never really lost; they remain close to my heart forevermore. Lovely expression here, Lauren.

    1. I’m happy my words resonated with you, Don. My husband brought the watch out one evening and inspiration tapped me on the shoulder. We also have many photos around the house. But our loved ones live inside of us forever. ❤️
