A Halloween Fright

It was a warm, late afternoon
not quite October thirty-first
Sunset would soon reveal itself
he put the car in reverse

Looking in the rear-view mirror
ready to part from the stall
His eyes blinked several times
he couldn’t believe what he saw

A creepy sort of clown with
the head bent to the right
He thought, “what the hell?”
he was thankful for daylight

He doesn’t scare quite easily
he’s been toughened by the screen
But trepidation did descend
though not in the least to be seen

However, his time was precious
So, he quickly chose to ignore
There was no sign of weapon
there was no want for rapport

He certainly made the right move
to turn the other cheek
It wasn’t smart at all to provoke
yet, he wasn’t acting weak

This day’s entertainment was scary
Clowns used to be rather comical
It was not only dreadfully creepy
It was surely psychological

Nevertheless, this tale ends happily
we’re extremely grateful he was safe
But fun comes in interesting forms now
this afternoon, it was eerily displayed

  1. Some of the people who play creepy clowns to scare people these days are dangerous. Don’t know why they choose to destroy the image we had of them growing up as a happy fun group. Not a nice world we live in today.

    1. Thanks for the complement, Maureen! It really is sick when people do things like this. Our son was in the car, so we’re glad he was okay and it didn’t turn into a dangerous situation. 💕💕

  2. Lauren, I get cold shivers just reading this and can imagine the fear of your son and you for him…I’m glad he is safe but what a frightening incident. Have a safe Happy Halloween. 🎃

    1. Thanks, Annika! I got shivers when he told me the story over the phone. 🙂 Our Halloween was quiet, only 3 trick-or-treaters, the same as the last few years. So, this year may have been our last attempt. 🙂 Thanks again! 💗

  3. Great read! And I´m so happy everything went well for you and your son, Lauren! The world has become a weird place where people live in fear of clowns and monsters of all kinds… Never really liked clowns myself and thing they´re quite scary…

    1. Thanks, Sarah, for your kind words. I agree with what you said about the world nowadays. I remember though wearing a clown costume when I was young that my mom made – it was cute and cheerful. It wasn’t until I grew older that clowns became scary and creepy. So, I don’t think I’ll be able to return to that “cute” perception, which is sad for many. That some people had to shift our perception for a thrill. Anyway, thanks again for your visits and follow. 💓

      1. You´re welcome, Lauren. 🙂 I think it might be Stephen King´s fault 😉 Ever since I heard about “It” the whole clown thing was spoiled for me… Ah, well, luckily he wrote other stuff too, which I´ve read and liked, like The Shining – creepy of course but without clowns! 😉

  4. Eeeeek~ Halloween can certainly be eerie and your poem captures this atmosphere well, Lauren. I like clowns usually but know many people find them to be scary. Hope you had a fun night!

    1. Thanks, Christy! When I was young, I wore a clown costume made by my mom, and it was cheerful and fun. Clowns have a different meaning these days, so I stay away from them. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Michelle! It’s a scarier world now, but I do remember those days of cute and funny clowns. Times have changed, but yes, we’re thankful for a happy ending. Now, he’s on his way to Tokyo, so again, I worry and pray for his safety. 💗
